Recession has been one of the major pain areas in the IT sector. I was going thru an article in one of the most popular business magazine in which interestingly, the human resource layoff strategy was described. Through all latest news communication channels, be it News channel or our friends circle we all are well informed that layoff planning can happen anytime in any of the IT organizations and no wonder that one final day you are getting a news that in your company - "a couple of hundred people will be in Layoff list, in a phased manner".
While reading that article, I was more curious to know at what criteria can the employers pick an employee for layoff list. Interestingly, you may be surpirsed to know that in the layoff list around 80% are considered as ?difficult employees?. So, now I was again wondering as to what is definition of a ?difficult employee?.
The definition that I found there was quite realistic and make me think over it deeply. I have worked with almost 4 organizations and have observed the similar trend. That is, in every department/organization there are few people who are arrogant, demeaning (to others), insubordinate, not trustworthy, (always) cribbing and unproductive.
It sure means that such people are at the first place in the queue when it comes to being shown the door. So, if anyone of you have the below listed tendency, you might be the soft target for your current employer. Bewar!e!:
1. Work is your foe/ additional responsibility: If you don't prefer working for long hours or during weekends. But in a down economy & competitive environment your approach towards this additional work plays a huge role in whether you are a valuable employee of the organization or not. Organizations generally perceive an employee?s worth by evaluating his/her work ethics.
2. Your personal problems are public knowledge: If most of your colleagues are aware of all your personal problems, from hole in the shoe, missed breakfast, argument with your partner or friend, then the recession needle may point to you. Because no one would be really interested in these kind of regular updates. Beleive it or not, you may find your subordinates being more interested in knowing the your work status updates rather the work around of the work given to you.
Acceptance of such employees is the major pain area in the organization these days because each employer would want his employee to provide value added services. So watch your approach in the office, who knows someone is preparing list to lay off!
So, Bewar!e and be prepare!d for your actions.
Good luck!
