Indian student faces deportation from Australia
An Indian student Shivendra Singh, who is suffering from severe depression after being the victim of three armed robberies, is being “threatened with deportation”, a media report said on Friday. The 30-year-old IT student, who came to the Australian city of Adelaide from Uttar Pradesh in India, wants to take his skills back to India but has been caught in a dilemma not of his own making, ABC Online reported. He was robbed while manning the counter of a corner shop in late 2004. 'It was really bad. I had nightmares continuously about whether I should have done something. But I was not able to do anything,' Singh said. He said, thereafter, 'everything fell apart in my life'. 'I didn't realise... culture-wise as well that I can be a patient of depression, but as I went on I just realised that my concentration in studies and other things were worsening.'
JNU students ragged, accused removed from hostel
"We are shocked. It has never happened on our campus," JNU proctor Neera Kongari told IANS. "The victims were fresh MCA (Masters in Computer Application) students and those who ragged them are semester third and fourth students. It is a first of its kind and sad incident in our university, and we are going to take the strongest action," she said. The incident took place in Tapti hostel on Wednesday night. Kongari said there were five to six students who were ragging their juniors. "The anti-ragging committee got a tip-off about the incident and conducted the raid. They caught them red handed. We have already withdrawn the accused students from the hostel," Kongari said. "Further inquiry is on. We will take stringent action so that such an act is never repeated on our campus," she said.
Engg students to create miniature satellite
Forty students from seven engineering colleges in Bangalore and Hyderabad have been included in a team guided by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to create a 'Pico satellite'. The students are busy building the smallest satellite for their country at the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bangalore. The satellite resembles a small cube - weighs only 850 gm and has a volume of 1.1 litres. It contains an imaging camera with a 90m resolution and will perform the function of a remote-sensing satellite. Chetan Angadi, one of the team members said, "The challenge is to bring all the features of an ordinary satellite in this miniature form." The satellite will be launched in December through PSLV to a 700-km orbit. The team members have even prepared a ground station.
